Performing and Studio Drummer
“If I was any musician in the world – not a drummer – that is who I want on the drums for me... she is a great example of a modern drummer.” Mike Johnston on the Modern Drummer podcast. (2019)
New York-based drummer Madden Klass is a vibrant, multifaceted player with uncommonly varied influences. Inspired by the most demanding and exacting live drummers who have found success as band members, Madden has always seen her role as a player in the composition.
Currently studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Madden challenges herself with eclectic & intensely progressive material, but her roots lie in her early fandoms: heavy rock, hip-hop, and pop. She recently took on the demanding opportunity of being the sole drummer on the 2019 Mike Doughty/Wheatus USA tour, where she performed the acclaimed Soul Coughing record, Ruby Vroom as well as the Wheatus support set, which encompassed a repertoire loaded with tricky sticking & nuanced groove. She has continued her endeavors supporting Mike Doughty on latest recording Ghost of Vroom 2 (September 2020).
Klass’s collaborative band Space Junk is Forever, is a keyboard driven prog-rock group featuring Hammond B3, Rhodes, soaring guitar, precise bass lines and technically challenging drum parts with an emphasis on melody in regard to the cymbal arrangements. Additionally, her alternative/Indie group Raavi and the Houseplants released their debut LP in December 2019. Her role in the band consists of creating subtle yet unusual parts that lock in with the bassist and support the vocals, while keeping the emphasis on groove.
Madden is currently endorsed by Meinl Cymbals, Ludwig Drums and Vic Firth sticks, TNR Products, and Snare Weight, Rim Riser, and Big Fat Snare Drum.
